Use cases

Our A-CAES technology addresses essential energy storage needs. Learn why long duration energy storage is essential to the resilience of the grid and enabling the energy transition, and about the benefits of using A-CAES to build the grid of the future.

Why A-CAES?

US Annual Electric Generating Capacity

We need to bring our grid into the 21st century, prioritizing energy security, reliability, and resiliency – and energy storage is a key piece of the puzzle.

Currently, fossil fuels represent more than half of global electricity generation capacity, but the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) expects 90% of global electricity to come from renewables by 2050. Renewable energy is plentiful and affordable—but not as stable or consistent as fossil fuels.

From California and New York to Ontario and Australia, grid operators have demonstrated that grids need long duration storage of at least 8- to 10-hours to ensure our electricity system continues to reliable and resilient. LDES provides the crucial flexibility and reliability to maintain grid stability. To support a stable, reliable, and resilient grid that works for all communities and businesses well into the future, we need to invest in LDES – and that’s where
A-CAES comes in.

Renewable integration

A-CAES can help maintain system reliability as intermittent generation like wind and solar increases, and as thermal generation is retired. A-CAES can provide dispatchable or baseload renewables and can optimize large solar/wind project economics through time-shifting to reduce curtailment.

Transmission deferral

A-CAES serves as a non-wires alternative to defer grid network investment, alleviating grid congestion during peak periods and providing locatable, reliable power for critical areas and infrastructure.

Replacing retiring generation assets

A-CAES serves as replacement capacity for end-of-life fossil fuel assets, by providing identical synchronous generation for grid reliability, without emissions.

The technology also has the ability to repurpose decommissioned thermal plants by leveraging
the existing interconnection and infrastructure.
