“Game-changing” long-duration energy storage projects win government backing
24 Feb, 2022
EDF UK has secured £2 million from BEIS to advance four longer-duration energy storage projects, supporting the UK’s net zero goals.
These projects aim to counteract renewable energy intermittency by storing energy over extended periods.
The initiatives include storing electricity as hydrogen using depleted uranium hydride, deploying a large-scale vanadium flow battery, metalizing energy with zinc, and exploring compressed air storage in existing gas facilities, partnering with us.
These innovations, funded through BEIS’s Longer Duration Energy Storage Demonstration (LODES) competition, are crucial for enhancing grid resilience.
Combined with short-duration storage methods, they promise to accelerate the transition to renewable energy, reduce costs, and ensure reliable electricity supply.
