“Game-changing” long-duration energy storage projects win government backing

24 Feb, 2022

  • EDF UK has secured £2 million from BEIS to advance four longer-duration energy storage projects, supporting the UK’s net zero goals.
  • These projects aim to counteract renewable energy intermittency by storing energy over extended periods.
  • The initiatives include storing electricity as hydrogen using depleted uranium hydride, deploying a large-scale vanadium flow battery, metalizing energy with zinc, and exploring compressed air storage in existing gas facilities, partnering with us.
  • These innovations, funded through BEIS’s Longer Duration Energy Storage Demonstration (LODES) competition, are crucial for enhancing grid resilience.
  • Combined with short-duration storage methods, they promise to accelerate the transition to renewable energy, reduce costs, and ensure reliable electricity supply.
