First offtake deal signed for 500MW/4,000MWh advanced compressed air energy storage project in California

13 Jan, 2023

  • We have entered into a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Central Coast Community Energy (3CE) for a 200 MW/1,600 MWh portion of its planned 500 MW/4,000 MWh Willow Rock Energy Storage Center in California.
  • This facility, set to be operational by 2028, will be connected to the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power grids.
  • Hydrostor’s A-CAES technology, which does not require thermal power for operation, uses flooded rock caverns to maintain air pressure and is considered more efficient and space-saving than traditional compressed air methods.
  • The company is currently developing additional large-scale storage projects in California and Australia, totaling around 9 GWh.
  • Hydrostor’s projects, including Willow Rock, aim to provide competitive, long-duration storage solutions to support renewable energy integration and grid stability over their anticipated 50-year operational lifespan.
