Hydrostor’s Silver City Energy Storage Project, funded with $45 million from ARENA, aims to replace diesel generators in Broken Hill with one of the world’s largest compressed air energy storage plants.
Situated in a disused mine shaft, this $652-million project could provide eight hours of backup power for the town’s 17,000 residents.
By utilizing compressed air technology, it seeks to stabilize electricity prices and enhance grid reliability, supporting Australia’s transition to 82% renewables by 2030.
This innovative solution, akin to pumped hydro, offers dispatchable power crucial for remote areas like Broken Hill, according to ARENA CEO Darren Miller.
